It’s a privilege to live in a community where neighbourly spirit still means something.
The truth about life in a small community lies in the things that make it special – the festive lights that lift a dark December, the tidy bench to rest on by the Louis McGuffie Memorial Arch, and the beautifully-planted town gardens or area around the war memorial – and they don’t happen by accident. They happen because local people care.
As your Community Council, one of our main roles is to listen to what matters to you, then help make things happen or help direct you to those who can. Community Councils are the most local tier of democratic representation – we represent community views for our area on planning, policing, and services – but more than that, we exist to support our communities to lead themselves where possible.
And that’s never been more important. With councils and other agencies under growing pressure, the places that thrive will be those where people raise their hand, not to do everything, but to do something. A little time, shared generously, adds up to a lot.
Wigtown and District Community Council is looking for new volunteers to sign up to help when and where they can. We need people willing to lend a hand with:
- Community resilience e.g. checking on neighbours during bad weather, gritting pavements.
- Town maintenance e.g. litter picking, sign cleaning, grass cutting, small DIY improvements.
- Christmas lights installation…because we know the magic doesn’t happen by itself! From ladder-holders to plug-checkers, many hands make (the) light(s) work.
There’s no obligation. Signing up doesn’t commit you to anything – it simply means you’re covered by Community Council insurance when/if you do choose to help. That’s it. No pressure, just a warm invitation to be part of the team.
In Wigtown, Bladnoch, Kirkinner and Whauphill, we’ve got something you can’t buy – a genuine can-do attitude and a community that shows up for each other – let’s build on it. No experience needed.
If you’re ready to sign up, you can fill out the volunteering form HERE. If you want to ask questions first you can reach out to us through Wigtown Community Council Facebook page or talk to any member.
The best communities aren’t built by accident – they’re built by people like you.
