A714 and A714/B7005 Junction – Petitions and Road Safety Concerns

Petitions 1 and 2
Following two fatalities on the A714, ongoing accidents and near misses at the A714/B7005 junction, the Wigtown
Community Council has initiated two Public Petitions to gather Community feedback and raise awareness of
continuing safety concerns on roads around and within Wigtown.
Petition 1 focuses on Speed Limits and Road Signage. Petition 2 requests the reclassification of the B7005 to the
A714 and vice versa.
Full details of the scope of the Petitions are listed in paragraphs 2a, 2c, 3a, 3b, 4a and 4b below. Further Petitions on
this important issue, may follow.
If residents of Wigtown wish to sign the Petitions, copies can be found in the Community Shop, Scad’s, Spinning a
Yarn and the Library.
The Petitions will run until the end of September, after which representations will be made to Dumfries and
Galloway Council and the local Police force.
Thank you for your support.
A714 and B7005 Safety Concerns – For Consideration

  1. Immediate Action at the A714/B7005 junction:
    a. Reinstatement of badly worn road markings on the B7005 Bladnoch approach.
    b. Repair of badly eroded soft verge on the corner of the B7005 and A714 into Wigtown.
    c. Resurfacing of the entire, badly eroded road surface, on the B7005 Bladnoch approach.
  2. Traffic Calming Road Signs and Markings at the A714/B7005 junction:
    a. Stop signs (and associated road markings) at the B7005 Bladnoch and A714 Wigtown approaches. A
Giveway sign on the A714 Newton Stewart approach.
    b. “Slow” warning road markings on all approaches to the A714/B7005 junction.
    c. White bollards on all soft kerb areas surrounding the A714/B7005 Junction, as recently installed at
the Barnkirk junction on the Newton Stewart bypass.
  3. Speed Limits:
    a. 50 mph on the A714 from Baltersan Cross, reducing to 40 mph at Glenturk through Culquhirk Bridge
and reducing to 30 mph on the approach to Wigtown.
    b. 50 mph from the Bladnoch Bridge until the Clauchrie turn on the A714.
    c. 20 mph speed limits on all A714 approaches into Wigtown town centre, as found in Stranraer, Castle
    Douglas, Springholm, and Crocketford.
  4. A714/B7005 road reclassification and junction redesign:
    a. Swap the existing B7005 and A714 road classifications. The B7005 should become the A714 and the
A714, through Wigtown, should become the B7005. A714 through traffic would then continue from
Newton Stewart, along the Wigtown bypass to Bladnoch and beyond. With the B7005 running
through Wigtown, appropriate traffic calming measures could be put in place, particularly around
    the Primary school.
    b. Implement a complete A714/B7005 junction redesign, to direct southbound through traffic towards
the bypass, NOT route through Wigtown town centre.
